About the Library

Our Goal

The Madison County Library System, located in central Mississippi near the state capital of Jackson, is one of forty-seven public library systems in the state of Mississippi. MCLS is a joint city-county public library system.

We are governed by an administrative Board of Library Trustees, consisting of nine members: one from each of the four cities in Madison County, and one appointee from each of the five county supervisors' districts.

The library system is largely supported by local taxation. Based upon the yearly budget request of the Board of Trustees appropriations are provided each year from Madison County and from each municipality in the county. Additional income comes from a per capita grant from the State of Mississippi (administered by the Mississippi Library Commission), and from a number of other miscellaneous grants, gifts, and library fines.

Our Mission

The mission of the Madison County Library System is to provide library resources and services necessary to meet the evolving informational, recreational, and cultural needs of the public, thus enhancing individual and community life.

Friends of the Library (FOL)

Your support is greatly appreciated. Each year membership fees and book sale proceeds are used to make significant improvements at your branch for both staff and patrons. Also, the Friends of the Library provide monetary support for the children’s summer reading program and adult/family programming throughout the year.  As a Friend, you are invited to all adult programs as well as book sale preview parties and sales.  It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow library enthusiasts, purchase great books, and have fun, too!
