The Madison County Library System now has a listing of free E-books available on the Internet for download. Most of these resources can be used on a Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, Android Phone, iPhone, iPad, laptop, or a regular desktop computer. Gutenberg
This site permits the user to download more than 33,000 free e-books to be read on a PC, Kindle, iPad, or other portable device. No registration is required.
Some of the most popular free classics can be found by browsing in the Google store under the Free Classics Shelf. Google Books stores the user's library in the digital cloud, so books can be read on just about any device with an internet connection. This site offers nearly 3 million free e-books from the public domain.
Free E-books
This site requires registration for standard memberships, which are free. It offers unlimited access to e-books in HTML format and access to five e-books every month in PDF or TXT format.
Booklending
Kindle lending was launched by Amazon.com in December, 2010. Any Kindle owner that has lending enabled can lend a book to a friend, family member, or any other Kindle user for 14 days. At the end of the 14 days the book is automatically transferred back to the book owner's Kindle.
Digital Book Index
This site provides links to more than 165,000 full-text digital books. It supports IPad, Kindle and Nook readers. The site also includes classic children's books.

Inkmesh is a search engine that makes it easier to find free e-books for the Kindle, iPhone, Sony Reader, Nook, laptops, iPad, and other devices. It includes more than 3,500 promotional e-books that appear to be by lesser-known authors of fiction and nonfiction.
