Part-Time Circulation Assistant

This position will work at the Ridgeland Branch every Saturday from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm and every Monday from 9:30 am - 6:00 pm with an hour for lunch.


Position Summary:

Must have great interpersonal communication skills and enjoy working with people, as this job requires a high level of interaction with the public. An ability to multi-task and prioritize while exceeding the needs of our patrons is also desired.


Education/Experience:

Minimum of high school diploma. Undergraduate degree and previous library experience preferred; customer-service and computer experience required.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include the following but are not limited to:

  • Works under the supervision of the Head of Circulation and Branch Manager
  • Performs all duties of the circulation desk service including, but not limited to registering patrons, issuing cards, and updating records, checking materials in and out using the automated system, collecting monies, using the cash register, answering telephones, providing routine information or referring and transferring calls, calling patrons regarding in-house holds, book repair, etc.
  • Provides research assistance and reference and readers’ advisory services to the public
  • Assists patrons with computer activities, such as basic level word processing, email tasks, and searches.
  • Responds promptly and courteously to resolve patron complaints.
  • Refers patrons, whose complaints cannot be resolved, to the Head of Circulation.
  • Assists with shelf reading, shelving materials, weeding and shifting collection as needed and assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Head of Circulation or Branch Manager.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing normal duties of this job, employees may be required to sit or stand for longer periods of time and/or move from one area of the library to another. The employee may be required to climb ladders or step stools, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, push or pull loaded book carts, lift and carry stacks of books, or move boxes of materials of considerable weight from one location to another. The employee may be required to lift up to 35 pounds. The employee should have sufficient vision and hand/eye coordination to perform repetitive movements and job duties. Tasks require visual perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
