Proctoring
Take exams in a quiet, supervised environment at participating library locations.
Exam Proctoring
The Madison County Library System offers exam proctoring services to support lifelong learning. Exams are administered upon request, based on the availability of staff, facilities, and technology.
Fees and Cost
There is no fee for Madison County residents or MCLS cardholders. However, the library does not cover any costs associated with administering or returning exams. The student or examining institution must provide a return envelope with sufficient postage.Additional fees may apply for services such as faxing ($1.00 per page) and photocopying ($0.20 per page). All applicable costs must be paid prior to the administration of the exam.
Scheduling and Availability
Proctoring is available by appointment only. Applications must be submitted at least three days in advance. While the library provides a reasonably quiet space for testing, students should be aware that the library is a public environment and complete silence cannot be guaranteed.
Proctoring Guidelines
Students must complete a proctoring application that includes details about the institution, contact information for the instructor or testing center, and specific exam requirements such as time limits and permitted resources.
The library can proctor both written and online exams. Online exams may be taken on a library computer or a personal device if permitted. The library does not install software on its computers and cannot guarantee that technical issues will not occur. Students are responsible for arranging delivery of exam materials to the library. A valid photo ID and any required credentials must be presented at the time of testing.
Proctors will enforce all rules provided by the examining institution, including time limits and testing conditions. The use of cell phones or communication with others during the exam is not permitted. Any suspected violations will be reported to the examining institution. Prior communication between the examining institution and the library is required to verify exam requirements and ensure proper procedures.
Limitations of Service
Library staff cannot proctor exams that are brought in directly by students. The library is not responsible for delayed, incomplete, or lost exams once they have been returned to the examining institution. Additionally, the library is not responsible for interruptions caused by emergencies, power outages, or technical issues. In such cases, exams may be rescheduled and the institution notified. Due to legal and ethical limitations, proctors will only verify and sign documentation for responsibilities they can directly fulfill.
Responsibilities of the Exam Taker
Students are responsible for submitting a completed Proctoring Application to the desired branch. The Branch Manager will follow up to finalize any required documentation.
It is important to confirm that the library can meet all requirements set by the examining institution. Students should contact the library before their exam to verify that materials or login information have been received.
Students must arrive on time and bring all required materials, including identification, writing tools, and any permitted resources. Only approved items will be allowed in the testing area, and personal belongings must be secured beforehand.
Students are responsible for knowing all exam deadlines. Exams will be held for up to six weeks from the date received, after which they will be destroyed if not completed.
